Mary Agnes Conlon: the heart and soul of Kiltimagh.
Mary Agnes Conlon died in March 1981. She was a member of a very respected
family; being a niece of the world handball champion, Jim Kelly, and
her father was James Conlon of Cloondolagh. Mary Agnes was the eldest
of a family of three.
The Conlons lived on Main Street. They rented a pub nearby. The family
was well known for its generosity. Mary Agnes was very kind to
natives of Kiltimagh, returning home on holiday. Indeed, she often
gave a "baby power" to people before they left the town, on their
way back to England or America.
Her passing left a great void in the town and country, alike. Old
age pensioners were drawn to the pub on Friday. They knew that they
would get the finest whiskey or brandy, with the measure overflowing.
There, too, they would hear the latest stories, circulating around
the town.
It was not only the senior citizens to whom she was generous; there
was always something for the children, a few sweets or a bar of
chocolate. They loved Mary Agnes, and were always willing to run
messages for her.
Mary Agnes will never be replaced. She was the heart and soul of the town.
But those who had the privilege to know her will remember that
welcoming smile, from behind the counter of her small pub, always.
